Foster A Dog

Foster a dog by opening your home and heart to a dog in need. By allowing us to temporarily place a dog with you, you save the life of an otherwise homeless animal. Foster care consists of providing a safe, loving, temporary home for a dog until a permanent adoptive home can be found. All dogs are screened for health and temperament before entering our program. We can only rescue as many dogs as we have foster homes!

We provide veterinary care and guidance. You provide the food, love, training and home. The dog provides you with love, joy, and the satisfaction of having saved a life.

The time involved is usually from a few weeks to several months. The dog is shown at adoption events and posted on websites: ours (www.bassetandbeagle.org), and PetFinder (www.petfinder.org).

Foster home responsibilities:

1. Provide temporary home for the dog.
2. Be patient. Understand that all dogs are rescue dogs and their behavior can be unpredictable. Be prepared for some adjustment in the beginning. It can be stressful for both you and the dog to be in a new situation.
3. Be willing to foster your dog from rescue to adoption. The amount of time needed to find a permanent home for a dog can vary from weeks to months.
4. If you are working full time, provide a safe place inside your home for the dog to be while you are gone.  A fence of at least 4 feet is recommended to prevent a dog from jumping over.
5. Foster homes sign a foster agreement and agree to abide by Basset and Beagle Rescue of the Heartland, Inc. policies.
6. Notify the BBRH board of directors or foster home coordinator immediately in the event the dog is sick or lost. Take the dog to medical appointments and any adoption events in your area if possible.
7. In the event that an animal is sick or shows serious temperament issues, the BBRH Executive Board will make decisions on how best to handle the situation.
8. Treat the dog as a member of your family.

Dogs are placed through adoption events, the internet, and advertising. All adopted dogs must have adoption papers filled out and signed. We welcome foster homes that work to find permanent homes for their foster dogs. However, BBRH requirements much be met by all adopters. A designated BBRH executive board member or adoption coordinator must finalize all adoptions. In event that a foster home decides to adopt, a screening process is used to finalize the arrangement and adoption donations are paid to BBRH in order to help cover costs so that we can assist the next rescued dog.
