HELLO FRIENDS!! My name is Leo, and I am a looking for my FUREVER family! I think I am a four-year-old, basset/corgi mix. I was so happy when someone picked me up as a stray down south and contacted Basset and Beagle Rescue of the Heartland. I don’t remember my life before rescue, but when I came into rescue, I had to have painful treatments for heartworm disease. My foster parents think I was treated very badly because it took me a long time to trust them.
When I arrived in my foster home, I was very timid and hyper vigilant. Every sudden move or unexpected noise made me cower. I hated to be in my crate, but I eventually learned it is my safe space. I sleep in my crate all night and stay in there when the humans are gone. I really enjoy just hanging out in my comfy crate. At first, I didn’t want to be around the humans, and then I learned my foster mom gave me food and treats, so I liked to be around her. It took me longer to learn that my foster dad was a good guy and wasn’t going to hurt me. I just recently started sitting next to him on the couch. I get along very well with my foster fur-brother, even when he takes up most of the space in my crate. My foster mom is always telling me to play with him, but he plays a little rough for me. I like toys, but I mostly like to cuddle with or chew up the toys.
I love to cuddle, especially with little kids. I’m very gentle with them, but if they get too rowdy, then I go to my crate. I prefer to think of myself as the silent type, as I don’t bark much. I don’t know if I like cats. My humans think I would just stay away from them. I don’t need a lot of attention, but I don’t like to be left alone. My humans have gradually increased the time they leave me alone, so I am getting better at it.
My perfect FUREVER home would be patient and understanding with me. I think it will take me some time to warm up to my FUREVER family, but once I do, we will spend many awesome years together.
